5 Top Tips for Effective Web Design

Designing the right website for your business can be a challenge. Not only do you have to create the right aesthetic, but it’s also vital to factor in site speed, different devices, Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) and User Experience (UX).

Fitting all of these together to create a great website can be a complex process, but it doesn’t have to be a challenge if you understand each piece of the puzzle. Here are the top 5 things everyone should do when creating a website for a business:

1. Balance the Colour Scheme

As there are so many different shades and tones to choose from, it can be easy to get carried away with colour. Although bright and bold colour schemes are favourable to a lot of designers, it’s important not to put too many together when creating a website.

This can overwhelm the site and become quite imposing, so it’s recommended that you stick to a simple palette - typically using your brand’s colours - upon neutral background hues. This allows for key features, like call-to-action buttons and menu items, to pop more and really grab the attention of your site’s visitors.

At Digity, we have experienced designers who understand the importance of colour schemes and regularly create pleasing palettes for our clients.

2. Incorporate SEO

Although it isn’t very exciting, SEO is a vital part of all website design. After all, what’s the point in designing a great website if it doesn’t have a fighting chance of being seen?

When designing a website, some elements of SEO that web designers should include are:

  • How to use header tags appropriately, like <h1>, <h2>, <h3> etc
  • How to optimise images to speed up loading times and decrease the bounce rate - this is the percentage of visitors who only view one page on your website and leave without taking any actions
  • How the part of a link that identifies a certain page (for example, a slug) can affect organic search rankings

Of course, there are other complex elements of SEO that web designers should understand - but that would be another article in itself. Our Design Team have the knowledge and expertise to incorporate SEO into your site effectively, allowing you to trust that the job will be done well. Find out more about this here.

3. Be Thoughtful with Your Images

The website you design needs to showcase the absolute best of your business, so it’s only right to make sure you choose them carefully.

Not only do they need to be of a high quality - nothing fuzzy or out-of-focus - but they should also be relevant to the content on the page. If you’re designing the ‘Meet the Team’ page, then having a beautiful image of your product or service probably won’t be the right thing to use.

The last thing to note about thoughtful imagery is that you should pay attention to the type of file you’re using, as this can impact the loading speed of your website pages. Understanding the difference between a JPG and a PNG will do wonders for your website’s design.

4. Use Responsive Design

Visitors will come to your website on a variety of devices with different screen sizes, so it’s imperative that you cater to each one when designing your website. Every user deserves a great experience, so you need to make sure you optimise your site to have a responsive design.

Whilst it can be exciting to incorporate exciting elements like animations and gradients into your design, it’s far more important to spend time developing the UX and UI (User Interface) of your site to ensure that visitors have a good experience.

Our designers are well-versed in creating functional websites that work well for all visitors, always taking the time to test and improve the user’s journey and experience. Speak to our team about your requirements now.
