Strengths and Weaknesses of chatGPT

What's all the hype about? Find out from the Service itself as well as my own experience so far...

If you've been living under a rock for the past few months, you may have never heard of chatGPT. If like many though, you've heard lots of excited/slightly scared discussions about how it's going to help students complete essays in under a minute and write meaningful social media content in seconds, this article will be useful for you. FYI the photo above is one I found by searching 'AI' on a stock image library, the rest of what you're about to read was actually generated by chatGPT - you don't get a dog and bark yourself...

Me:

Write me an article on the strengths and weaknesses of chatgpt

ChatGPT:

ChatGPT is a state-of-the-art language model developed by OpenAI that uses deep learning techniques to generate human-like text. It is trained on a massive amount of data and is capable of understanding and generating a wide range of language, making it a powerful tool for a variety of natural language processing tasks such as text generation, machine translation, and conversation simulations.

One of the main strengths of ChatGPT is its ability to generate highly coherent and fluent text. It can complete sentences, paragraphs, and even entire articles with a high degree of coherence, making it a valuable tool for tasks such as text summarization and content creation. Additionally, ChatGPT can understand and respond to context in a way that mimics human-like conversation, making it an excellent tool for chatbot and virtual assistant applications.

Another strength of ChatGPT is its ability to generate text in a wide range of styles and formats. It can generate text in the style of news articles, poetry, stories, and much more. This makes it a versatile tool for a wide range of natural language processing tasks.

Despite its many strengths, ChatGPT does have its limitations. One of the main weaknesses of the model is its lack of understanding of common-sense knowledge and world facts. It may generate nonsensical or incorrect information if it has not seen similar examples of information during its training. Additionally, while ChatGPT can generate text that is highly coherent and fluent, it may still contain errors and inconsistencies, especially when it is tasked with generating text on a topic it has not been trained on.

Another weakness of ChatGPT is that it can generate text that is biased towards the data it was trained on. This can result in text that contains stereotypes, offensive language, and other forms of bias. As the model is trained on data from the internet, it might reflect the bias present in the data.

In conclusion, ChatGPT is a powerful and versatile language model that can be used for a wide range of natural language processing tasks. However, it does have its limitations, such as a lack of understanding of common-sense knowledge and world facts, as well as the potential to generate text that is biased or contains errors. Despite these limitations, ChatGPT is a valuable tool for many applications and continues to be improved upon by OpenAI.

There's no doubt about it in my mind that this is already a fascinating and very powerful tool which will play a key role in the future development of AI tools and how we use them in business. Microsoft have already made a multi-billion dollar investment into it and we're seeing more and more AI tools show up so it's a massive space which is evolving at pace.

Two More Strengths

I'm sure there are many but two key ones I want to highlight are:

1/ Price - It's currently free, you just need to sign-up but they want mass adoption for a number of reasons, not least to speed up the learning curve and improve the accuracy.

2/ Speed - It's incredibly quick. The above was generated in just a few seconds and I have examples of other articles I've trialled it on for my own research where it's generated a lot of depth in a very quick timeframe (less than a minute). I actually quite like the way it generates the text too as I find myself reading as it types to take in the information which in many cases, is what I really want - fast access to relevant knowledge.

Two More Weaknesses

Whilst I didn't have too much extra to add, having played with it for a couple of months now, two additional weaknesses are;

1/ Availability - It's clearly getting hit hard at the moment and is increasingly unavailable as sensible times of the day, albeit readily available in the evenings when my brain is full of questions to ask.

2/ Validity - The final point to highlight is that at the time of writing this, the database behind it goes up to 2021 so if you're asking questions requiring an up-to-date view/research, it will struggle. The clever thing though is that it is very honest and will tell you if it thinks what it may present could be dated/invalid.

Have a look if you haven't already and think about how you could embrace AI in your own business:
